Find out moreRaymarine Ambassador Giancarlo Pedote is in final preparations for the 2024 Vendée Globe 2024, on board his IMOCA 60 'Prysmian'. Equipped with Raymarine equipment, he is ready to take on the legendary solo race.
Friday - 04 October 2024
The Vendée Globe is the sailing world's most famous solo circumnavigation race. Inspired by the 1968 Golden Globe, it has seen over 200 competitors in its nine editions. The fact that only 114 of those competitors finished, highlights the difficulty of this race...
The sailors who take part face changing, often adverse weather conditions, including gigantic waves and freezing temperatures, covering over 28,000 miles (about 52,000 km). This is why this race is a journey, not only across the oceans, but also within oneself.
The boats, 18.28 meters long and defined by the IMOCA class, are powerful monohulls, capable of exceeding 30 knots in favourable wind conditions.
The tenth edition will start from Les Sables d’Olonne (France) on November 10, 2024.

Among the 40 sailors who will take part in this extraordinary journey is Giancarlo Pedote, long-time Raymarine Ambassador for the world of competitive sailing. For Giancarlo, this is his second edition, an exceptional fact in itself. He finished his first Vendée Globe in 2021, placing eighth, 19 hours behind the winner.
Giancarlo’s path to the race is unique: a philosophy graduate, former boxer, he has written several books on sailing, won the Transat Jacques Vabre in 2015, and was deservedly named Sailor of the Year in Italy twice in 2014 and 2016.
Giancarlo’s approach to sailing is fascinating. His “Cartesian” method aims at constantly surpassing his own limits. What better opportunity than to participate again in the legendary Vendée Globe?

Giancarlo will participate in the race aboard Prysmian, an IMOCA 60 class yacht equipped with a complete Raymarine electronics system, designed by VPLP/Verdier and built by Multiplast in Vannes. Launched on September 11, 2015, it measures 18.28 meters in length, 5.80 meters in width, and 4.50 meters in draft. Weighing 8 tons, it boasts a mast height of 29 meters and a sail area of up to 600 m².
Prysmian is equipped with a top-class onboard electronics system. Among the key instruments provided by Raymarine are the 9-inch Axiom+ chartplotter, the 7-inch Axiom+ RV chartplotter, the Ray53 VHF with integrated GPS, and the AIS700 Class B device. In addition to these products, there is the Quantum 2 radar, which remains the most important tool for Giancarlo: it not only allows him to see dangerous weather fronts approaching but also to avoid boats without AIS that would otherwise be invisible.
Fair winds, Giancarlo!
