In the world of fishing charters, staying ahead of the curve means embracing the latest technology. Tim Dean, the renowned captain of Calypso Fishing Charters has undertaken a comprehensive refurbishment of his 47ft O’Brien boat. The upgrade focused on installing cutting-edge Raymarine electronics to enhance the vessel’s performance and safety.

The boat now boasts the latest Axiom+ display, along with the Axiom 2 Pro and Axiom 2 XL units. The addition of the Cyclone Pro Radar to Tim’s arsenal features innovative detection capabilities, including Doppler target tracking, RangeFusion™ technology, Bird Mode and high-speed 60 rpm imaging. Dean says “when you’re trolling off the Coral Sea, leave the reef edge and go looking for that tuna aggregation. You find the birds; you find the tuna and the big blacks”

Calypso now also boasts the RVM1600, CHIRP sonar module with RealVision MAX. “CHIRP equipment is a game changer” says Dean “especially for that inshore shallow water... you’re marking individual fish; the stuff’s that good,” he says. “You can count how many fish are swimming around a reef. I’ll run low-frequency (50 kHz) CHIRP, then I’ll run my chartplotter on my big screen next to my 200 kHz (high-frequency CHIRP). At the touch of the screen I can move them anywhere I want. There’s nothing that can swim under, around, beside, behind this boat we won’t know it’s there. When a fish rolls past the sounder, I just touch the screen and it pops up on my GPS where that fish is. Even if I miss that fish, I can scroll back through the data and through the screen on the sounder... I could have run over a fish five minutes ago and I can touch his position and it will tell me where he was.”

Equipped with a FLIR M232 thermal camera, Calypso can capture detailed views of its surroundings, day, or night, and display them on the Axiom screens. “With the FLIR camera we have, coming into a marina at night, you’ll miss nothing. It’s the best thing I’ve ever put on my boat,” Dean says.

The entire fit-out was expertly executed by JSE Marine Electrical a trusted service dealer of Raymarine. Known for their attention to detail and high standards, JSE Marine Electrical meticulously installed every piece of equipment, turning the boat into a cutting-edge fishing vessel. Whether it’s navigating challenging waters or locating the best fishing spots, Captain Tim Dean and his crew are now more prepared than ever.
