Teacher turned adventurer. Sidse Birk Johannsen is a sailor, speaker and author. Follow her adventure into the remote areas of the North Sea, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Setting Sail

Sidse Birk Johannsen is a sailor, speaker, and author. Her life as a sailor began only four years ago, in 2020, and in a short time she has progressed from a beginner to an off-season solo sailor.

In her first small 31-foot boat, she began exploring the Baltic Sea, as well as the unknown territories within herself - as a comfort zone-expanding explorer. Since her first journey, Sidse has continued to explore the North Sea and the open horizon toward the isolated Faroe Islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. She shares her adventures on the Instagram profile @Sisi_atsea and in her recently published book, 'Too Much and Too Wild' (available in English in summer 2025).

When Sidse is not sailing, she works as a high school teacher and lives on board her boat, which she renovates herself. Soon she is taking leave from her teaching job to go full time sailing.

New Adventures Ahead

In the summer of 2025, Sidse will set sail again. This time aboard her newly acquired 40-foot C&C named Victory, heading north, where she will spend the late summer along Greenland's west coast, overwinter in Iceland, and cross the Norwegian Sea to Northern Norway when daylight returns in March 2026. The Raymarine electronic devices play a crucial role in ensuring safety during this sailing adventure to the latitudes of ice.

“I'm drawn to the Arctic in a way I can hardly explain. It's like a magnet pulling me back towards the cold. The Arctic is full of contrast; it's the most beautiful and the loneliest place I have ever been. The nature is so raw that it leaves your soul naked. To me, it's freedom and liberating. It’s a paradox that I feel drawn to this land where the ice meets the sea, because at the very same time, the cold water and isolated shores are constantly threatening to kill me.”

The high latitudes are not on the typical cruising routes. Populated places are far apart, and no towns are connected by road, meaning the best way to explore Greenland is by boat. On this adventure, Sidse will no longer be sailing alone.

“In an area where cell phone reception is an anomaly and along a shoreline that’s badly mapped, I'm not afraid to admit that my crew and I depend very much on the electronic security data provided by Raymarine's radar and the autopilot, ensuring us the necessary rest.”
